The Story of the Castle – From the Waldsteins to the Present

Nové Zámky Castle was built at the end of the 16th century for the noble Waldstein family, specifically for its members. The construction was overseen by the renowned Italian builder Carlo Valmadi, who was active at the time in nearby Hostinné. The original Renaissance building underwent several significant renovations over the centuries, altering its appearance and dimensions.

In 1623, the castle became part of the Frýdlant Duchy under Albrecht von Wallenstein. This influential military commander and politician had a lasting impact on the history of the castle and its surroundings. In 1633, the castle passed into the hands of Wilhelm Lamboy, who initiated major renovations and expansions that shaped its present form.

Architectural Transformations of the Castle

Nové Zámky Castle is characterized by a unique combination of Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Originally a one-story Renaissance structure, the castle was expanded between 1880 and 1890 with the addition of the south wing during the rule of the Deym family of Střítež. This period saw the transformation of the façade and the addition of new architectural elements blending Renaissance and High Baroque styles.

An interesting anecdote is that the Deym family was reportedly too embarrassed to show the castle to the well-known historian August Sedláček, suggesting that the renovations may not have fully adhered to the original design intent. Today, the castle consists of two wings forming an L-shape, with a polygonal tower reinforcing the eastern corner of the building — a feature likely dating back to the Renaissance period.

Castle Gardens and Historic Sculptures

An intriguing feature of the castle is its former garden, which has been preserved to this day. Within the garden, you will find several sculptures by Jan Brokoff, one of the most important Czech sculptors of the 18th century. These statues, maintaining their historic character, add a special atmosphere and charm to the castle.

The surroundings of the castle include extensive gardens and natural landscapes that have always contributed to the site’s majesty. Nearby lies the Krkonoše–Foothills Nature Park, renowned for its ecological purity and the presence of one of the Czech Republic’s most beautiful mountain ranges — the Krkonoše.
